The RX NASCAR Brief – June 6

NASCAR Raceday – Gordon aims for more luck at Pocono<o></o>
<o></o>
This week's stop on the Sprint Cup series is the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway, a unique tri-oval track with turns that are all of different degrees of banking. Jeff Gordon is the defending race winner, as he outlasted the rest of the field in a rain-shortened version of the 500-lap race in 2007.
<o></o>
Of course, it is difficult to look past anyone other than Kyle Busch as the favorite, and the JGR driver comes in at 400 after winning last week's race at Dover. Busch has a 16.2 finishing average at Pocono, and most of the weekend's storyline will revolve around his attempt to race in Texas on Friday for the Craftsman Truck Series, followed by Saturday's Nationwide race in Nashville, and wrapping up at Pocono on Sunday.
<o></o>
Busch's JGR teammate, Denny Hamlin, is next at 500 with Roush's Carl Edwards, and Hamlin loves racing at Pocono. In his six career races, he has two wins (both in his 2006 rookie season) and a finishing average of 2.8, by far the best of any active driver. Hamlin has also been running very well this season, but sometimes puts himself in precarious positions.
<o></o>
JGR's Tony Stewart and Hendrick's Dale Earnhardt Jr. are rated at 700, and Stewart may be better suited to win at Pocono with a victory and a finishing average of 12.4, which is fourth among active drivers. Meanwhile, Earnhardt Jr.'s winless streak has now reached 75 races, and “Junior Nation” is getting antsy to see their man in Victory Lane. Another Hendrick driver, defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, is also rated at 700 due to a 10.7 finishing average which leaves him behind only Hamlin.
<o></o>
Do not count Gordon as a darkhorse at 1100, as the No.24 driver is third among current drivers with a 10.8 finishing average in 18 races. Gordon has four straight top-tens in points races, and his team is just one good race from going on a tear.
